TAIPEI, Feb 22 Asia Pulse - Taiwan should focus on the development of electronic business, a Taipei-based Internet service company said in a briefing at the Presidential Office Monday.
E-commerce is one of Taiwan's features and strengths, said Jan Hung-tze, chairman of PChome Online Inc. -- one of Taiwan's largest Internet service providers that runs what it calls a "total web solution" of portal access, E-commerce and telecommunication.
Jan was at the Presidential Office to present a report to President Ma Ying-jeou and Cabinet officials on Taiwan's E-commerce development.
Jan also said that E-commerce also gives Taiwan the opportunity to expand its territory in the global market.
He mentioned the rapid expansion of the applications market in recent years, pointing out that since the release of Apple's first iPhone some four years ago, there have so far been over 10 billion downloads of applications (apps) for the smartphone.
"It is a huge market and Taiwan faces great demand for apps," Jan said.
With such major demand, Taiwan could turn itself into the world's largest apps factory, the business leader said, suggesting that the government and schools encourage the creation of apps.
He also advised telecommunication companies to focus on app design and creation.
The smartphones produced by Taiwan-based HTC Corp. (TAIEX:2498) might be as good as the iPhone in terms of function, but are supported by fewer apps than the massive number available for the iPhone, he said.
He expressed hope that Taiwan can become one of the world's active app creation areas. "It is the next phase of Taiwan's E-commerce," Jan said.
