FED: Australia to keep close watch on Austria=2

Opposition foreign affairs spokesman Laurie Brereton said Mr Downer's proposed action
on Austria fell well short of what was needed to register Australia's emphatic opposition
to racism and anti-Semitism.

He said Australia should suspend diplomatic ties while the statements and actions of
the new government were subjected to close scrutiny.

Mr Brereton said Ambassador Hughes would proceed to Vienna to take up his position
and pay the usual diplomatic calls.
