NSW: Tszyu loses bid to avoid paying damages to promoter
Champion boxer KOSTYA TSZYU has lost a legal bid to avoid paying his share of a multi-million
dollar damages award owed to his former promoter BILL MORDEY.
Mr MORDEY won a 1998 damages claim against Sky Channel and Mr TSZYU, which after some
interest, amounted to $8.5 million.
TSZYU was found to have breached his contract to only fight in bouts promoted by MORDEY'S
Fightvision, and Sky was found to have interfered in TSZYU'S contract relations with that
company.
Most of the damages were paid by Sky, leaving the boxer owing $767,000.
TSZYU took the matter to the New South Wales Industrial Relations Commission in an
effort to avoid paying the money by having his Fightvision contract declared void.
However, in September last year, a NSW Supreme Court judge granted an injunction stopping
TSZYU from pursuing that course by concluding it was an abuse of process.
TSZYU appealed against the injunction, but the NSW Court of Appeal today dismissed his action.
