Qld: Vote rigging scandal inches closer to Beattie
The Queensland vote-rigging scandal is inching closer to Premier PETER BEATTIE, with
allegations that electoral fraud occurred during his time as state secretary of the Labor
Party.
At the Shepherdson inquiry, key witness LEE BERMINGHAM told of false electoral enrolments
in the leadup to a bitter 1986 preselection battle between then Labor Minister ANNE WARNER
and current Labor MP JIM FOURAS.
Mr BEATTIE was the Labor Party's Queensland secretary at the time of the preselection,
but he denies any knowledge of irregularities during the internal party ballot.
Labor has also lost another endorsed candidate, BOB BOSCACCI, who was to contest the
Townsville-based seat of Thuringowa at the next state election.
Mr BEATTIE says the resignation of Mr BOSCACCI, the fourth Labor figure to withdraw
their candidacies in the last week, is for personal, family and health reasons.
He says it is not linked to the ongoing Shepherdson Inquiry into allegations of electoral fraud.
Labor candidate for the Brisbane seat of Redlands, JOHN BUDD, and disgraced ALP MPs
JIM ELDER and GRANT MUSGROVE have also indicated they will not contest the next election.
